Nuclear and Radiological Incident Preparedness and Protection

This presentation will provide factual information on the effects and impacts of improvised nuclear detonations and radiological incidents, with a focus on measures to protect the public. This session will cover the differences in radiological incidents and nuclear detonations, including sheltering, evacuation considerations, and how to reduce radiation casualties. Through pre-designating safe shelter areas, providing simple training, and using existing emergency preparation efforts, many lives can be saved. The session will also briefly cover the effects of a high-altitude nuclear detonation, and how that may impact utilities and critical infrastructure. Presenter Details

Dave Hunt, CPP, FBCI, is the principal for Homeland Security Consulting, LLC. He is a national expert in the field of emergency response with a 35-year background in law enforcement, terrorism response, fire/arson/explosives investigation, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical response. Working with several of the national laboratories, he led the team developing FEMA’s nuclear and radiological response guidance. He is a founding member of the EMP-SIG, now the National Disaster Resilience Council.
