Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a multi-disciplinary approach of crime prevention that uses urban and architectural design and the management of built and natural environments. CPTED strategies aim to reduce victimization, deter offender decisions that precede criminal acts, and build a sense of community among inhabitants so they can gain territorial control of areas, reduce crime, and minimize fear of crime. CPTED is also known around the world as Designing Out Crime, defensible space, and other similar terms. This workshop will introduce the concept of CPTED and demonstrate its use within an energy sector facility. It will present ways to apply CPTED principles without breaking the bank on upgrades or technology. When properly applied, CPTED can drastically reduce crime, enhance the esthetics of your facility, and create a safer environment.

Learning Outcomes/Objectives

Upon the completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe what CPTED is and the benefits gained through its application.
  2. Explain how CPTED can be applied in the Critical Infrastructure Protection environment.
  3. Explain ways you can increase safety/security without spending a fortune on upgrades or technology.
